Pre-Match Analysis
Head-to-Head
Nine goals in Paris on 28 April, and Bayern come home one behind. The first leg was 5-4 to PSG, and the half-time score of 3-2 tells you it was never under control at either end. Bayern scored four goals away from home in a Champions League semi-final and still lost the match, which is a strange combination of encouraging and alarming.
That was the second meeting of the season. The first was on 4 November in the league phase, also in Paris, and Bayern won it 2-1 after leading 2-0 at the interval. So the record between them reads: one Bayern win, one PSG win, both played at PSG, and twelve goals across the two matches. Our record holds nothing from earlier seasons, and it holds nothing at all about how these teams behave with Bayern at home — this is the first time in the sample that PSG have had to come here.
Two matches, twelve goals, an average of six a game, and a first leg in which both defences were repeatedly opened. That is the backdrop.
Form Guide
Bayern's season has been relentless. They took 21 points from the league phase, second in the table, seven wins and one defeat, 22 scored and eight conceded. In the knockout rounds they beat Atalanta 10-2 across two legs and Real Madrid 6-4, winning 2-1 away and 4-3 at home. Domestically they hold 83 points from 32 matches with 116 goals scored — a rate above three and a half a game — and a single defeat all season, 1-2 at home to Augsburg on 24 January.
There is a crack, though, and it is recent. On 2 May they drew 3-3 at home with Heidenheim, trailing 2-1 at the interval to a side well down the table. Thirty-five goals conceded in 32 league games is not a mean defence by the standards of a team scoring 116, and the Real Madrid tie, in which they shipped four across two legs, made the same point.
PSG came eleventh in the league phase on 14 points, went through the play-off round against Monaco 5-4 on aggregate, dismantled Chelsea 8-2 and then kept Liverpool scoreless across the quarter-final, winning 2-0 at home and 2-0 away. That defensive spell has not carried into everything since: 70 points from 31 league matches with 70 scored and 27 conceded, and a 2-2 draw at home to Lorient on 2 May.
Key Factors
Bayern's home record in this competition is the anchor of the bet. Six matches on this ground, six wins, 20 goals scored and six conceded. Chelsea, Club Brugge, Sporting, Union Saint-Gilloise, Atalanta and Real Madrid have all come here and all lost. No one has taken a point off them at home in Europe this season.
The tie's arithmetic reinforces it. Bayern trail by a goal, so a one-goal win only stretches the tie into extra time and anything short of that is not enough. They cannot play for a draw in any meaningful sense. A team that must attack, at home, with 116 domestic goals behind it, is a team that will spend most of the evening in the opposition half.
Against that stands PSG's away record in the competition, which is the best thing they have: seven away matches, five wins, one draw and one defeat, 18 scored and seven conceded, including 7-2 at Leverkusen, 3-0 at Chelsea and 2-0 at Liverpool. They travel well and they punish space, and a Bayern side chasing the tie will leave more of it than any of Bayern's previous home opponents did.
There is also an honest tension in the selection itself. The double chance pays on a Bayern win or a draw, but a draw on the night is no use to Bayern's tie at all, because level over 90 minutes leaves them a goal behind on aggregate. The bet and the sporting incentive are not perfectly aligned — this is a wager on 90 minutes, not on who progresses, and it is worth being clear about that rather than pretending the two are the same thing.
Our Verdict
This is the best-constructed pick of the round on our own numbers, and that is not a small thing. Double chance is one of only two markets we have made money on across 374 settled picks, at +0.4% alongside handicaps at +10.0%, against −5.4% on straight 1X2 and −15.6% on both teams to score. At 1.35 the price sits in the up-to-1.45 band, which at −0.6% is close to break-even. Compare that with the 1.45–1.60 band at −11.0% and you can see why this construction is preferable to backing a Bayern win outright.
We take Double Chance 1X (Bayern or Draw) at 1.35 with high confidence. The implied chance is 74.1%, and six wins from six European home matches, a must-win incentive and a one-defeat domestic season are enough to support a number that demanding.
What sinks it is a PSG away win, and PSG have five of those in seven attempts in this competition, three of them by two goals or more against Leverkusen, Chelsea and Liverpool. Bayern conceding first and opening up would be exactly the game PSG want.
