Marseille's home record is the strongest argument on the page: sixteen played, ten won, four drawn, two lost, 38 scored and 19 conceded. Fourteen of sixteen without defeat, and 2.38 goals a game at that end. The two home losses were 0-2 to Nantes on 4 January and 1-2 to Lille on 22 March. Away from home they are a different and much worse side — seven wins, one draw and nine defeats in seventeen, with 22 scored and 25 conceded. That one away draw in seventeen is a genuinely unusual number.

Rennes travel better than most. Seven wins, four draws and five defeats in sixteen away matches, 28 scored and 30 conceded, and the recent run is the best of it: 3-0 at Auxerre on 22 February, 4-0 at Nice on 8 March, 4-3 at Brest on 4 April and 3-0 at Strasbourg on 19 April, before a 4-2 defeat at Lyon on 3 May. At home they are similar to Marseille in shape if not in scoring: ten wins, four draws, three defeats in seventeen.

Recent form favours the visitors. Rennes have won five of their last six, most recently 2-1 at home to Paris FC on 10 May. Marseille won 1-0 at Le Havre on 10 May but lost 3-0 at Nantes on 2 May and 2-0 at Lorient on 18 April; their last home outing was a 1-1 draw with Nice on 26 April.

Both clubs arrive with the same thing at stake, from opposite sides. Rennes hold fifth on 59 points; Marseille sit sixth on 56 with a goal difference five better. Marseille cannot reach Lyon on 60 whatever happens, so fifth is the ceiling and this match is the whole of their remaining ambition. Rennes have more above them — Lille on 61 and Lyon on 60 are both within a win — so they have every reason to attack rather than protect.

The home and away splits are the reason the price is where it is. Marseille lose two home matches in sixteen and win seven away in seventeen; the version of them that turns up at their own ground is the top-two side of last season, and the travelling version is not.

The head-to-head reinforces it. Marseille have not lost a recorded home meeting with Rennes.

Against all that, Rennes's away form has been the better of the two records over the last three months, and they are the side in the stronger recent run. The gap in the table is three points in their favour.

Goals are likely. Marseille score 2.38 per home game; Rennes concede 1.88 per away game and have failed to score in only three of sixteen away trips. The two recorded meetings at Marseille produced eight goals between them. A high-scoring match is not what a double chance wants, because it widens the range of outcomes.

This is the tightest of the six on paper, and the honest reading is that the price does not fully respect the visitors. Stade Rennais FC 1901 are three points and one place above Olympique de Marseille, they have won five of their last six, and their away record is the stronger of the two travelling records. A 70.4 per cent implied chance for the lower-placed home side is a real ask.

What justifies it is the home split and the fixture history. Marseille have avoided defeat in fourteen of sixteen at their own ground, an 87.5 per cent rate against an implied 70.4, and have won both recorded home meetings with these opponents. What beats it is Rennes simply being the better team this season, which the table says they are. They won the August meeting 1-0, they have won 3-0 at Auxerre, 4-0 at Nice and 3-0 at Strasbourg on the road this year, and a defeat is the outcome Marseille's home season has produced twice in sixteen — infrequent, but not rare enough to be discounted at this price.
