Portugal vs Congo DR

Our published position on this match is Portugal on the minus-one Asian handicap. That is a demand, not a prediction of a win: Portugal have to take the match by two goals or more for it to pay, a one-goal win returns the stake, and anything else loses. Priced at 1.80, it needs to come in a little more often than 55% of the time to break even. Everything below is a test of whether the evidence supports asking that much, and the honest answer is that the evidence is thin on one side and mixed on the other.

Euro 2024 is the only earlier tournament our data holds, and Portugal's three group matches there are the closest comparable we own. They beat Czechia 2-1 on 18 June, won 3-0 in Turkey on 22 June, and lost 2-0 to Georgia on 26 June. Portugal are a clear favourite on our own price; an opening match against an opponent with no visible record is where a strong side has the freest hand, and the format — 32 of 48 teams advance, so a heavy defeat is not fatal — gives an underdog less reason to sit deep than a knockout tie would.

Against that: the price asks for a two-goal margin from a side that produced one in its last three group games, and lost one of the other two, and half of this fixture is unknown to us. Medium confidence flatters the selection rather than guarding it.

What beats it is the ordinary opening-round pattern. The first eighteen matches of this tournament, played between 11 and 16 June, produced eight draws, Spain among the sides held goalless.
