Five meetings, eight goals, and not one of them decided by more than a goal except a single afternoon in San Sebastián. Like their hosts, they are a home team: seven wins, six draws and five defeats at Mestalla, against four wins, four draws and ten defeats on the road with 15 scored and 29 conceded. Their form is the better of the two: a 2-0 win at Sevilla on 21 March, a 3-2 home defeat to Celta, a 1-0 loss at Elche, a 1-1 draw at Mallorca, a 2-1 home win over Girona, a 0-2 home defeat to Atlético Madrid, a 1-0 win at Athletic on 10 May and a 1-1 home draw with Rayo on 14 May.

Both clubs have something left. Sociedad are eighth on 45, three points behind seventh with six still to play for. Valencia are 12th on 43, four clear of the eighteenth place — effectively safe, though the arithmetic is not formally closed. Neither is playing for nothing, and neither is playing for very much.

The home-and-away split is the argument for the pick and it is a strong one on paper. Sociedad have taken 29 of 45 points at Anoeta; Valencia have won four times in 18 on their travels and scored 15 goals doing it. Add two home wins over this opponent in the record without conceding, and the shape of the bet is clear.

Working against it is form. Sociedad have one win in seven; Valencia have won two of their last four, including 1-0 at Athletic. A team drawing everything is a fine outcome for a double chance, but a side without a home win since early April is a poor foundation for confidence.
