Real Sociedad vs Getafe

The reverse fixture this season went the hosts' way. Real Sociedad won 2-1 in Getafe on 9 January, leading at half-time and holding on, which is the single most recent piece of evidence available and the friendliest to the pick. Look further back and the series turns awkward.

On 26 January 2025 Getafe came to the Reale Arena and won 3-0 in a match still goalless at the interval. That is the heaviest result in the sample by some way and it happened at this ground fifteen months ago. Before it, the two clubs drew 0-0 in Getafe on 1 September 2024 and 1-1 there on 21 April 2024. The oldest meeting we hold, at the Reale Arena on 24 September 2023, finished 4-3 to the hosts after Getafe led 2-1 at half-time.

Five games, then, with two Sociedad wins, one Getafe win and two draws. Fifteen goals across the five sounds busy, but seven of them came in one match; the other four produced eight between them, and four of the five were settled by a single goal or not settled at all. The honest reading is that this pairing has been close, low-scoring and unpredictable, and that the visitors have already won here once in recent memory.

Only a point separates these clubs. Real Sociedad are seventh on 42 points from 31 games with a goal difference of plus one; Getafe are eighth on 41 with minus five. Both have improved on last season, when Sociedad finished twelfth on 46 points and Getafe thirteenth on 42.

Sociedad's season has been built at home. Sixteen matches at the Reale Arena have produced eight wins, four draws and four defeats, worth 28 of their 42 points, with 32 goals scored and 24 conceded. Two goals a game at home is a decent return. The concession rate is less reassuring: they were held 3-3 by Oviedo on 21 February and 3-3 by Alaves on 11 April, so the last stretch at their own ground has been open. Their away record is ordinary — three wins, five draws and seven defeats from fifteen, fourteen points.

Recent form is mixed rather than convincing: a 1-0 win at Mallorca on 28 February, a 3-2 defeat at Atletico on 7 March, a 3-1 home win over Osasuna, a 1-3 defeat at Villarreal on 20 March, a 2-0 home win over Levante on 4 April and the 3-3 with Alaves. Three wins, a draw and two defeats in six.

Getafe's profile is the interesting one. They have scored 27 goals in 31 league games, and their defence has carried them: eleven conceded in fifteen home games. More to the point here, they have won more often away than at home. Sixteen away trips have brought six wins, two draws and eight defeats and twenty points; fifteen home games have brought six wins, three draws and six defeats and 21. Those six away wins include 0-2 at Celta, 1-2 at Sevilla, 0-1 at Athletic, 0-2 at Alaves, 0-1 at Real Madrid on 2 March and 1-2 at Espanyol on 21 March. This is a side that travels well and wins by narrow margins.

Their last three read the win in Barcelona, a 2-0 home win over Athletic on 5 April and a 1-0 defeat at Levante on 13 April.

The first is the home split. Sociedad have taken two thirds of their points at the Reale Arena and scored 32 there, which is comfortably the better half of their season and the foundation of the pick.

The second is that Getafe's away record undercuts the usual home-advantage argument. Twenty points on the road from sixteen games, six wins including one at the Bernabeu and one at San Mames, is not the profile of a team that can be expected to fold at a mid-table ground.

Third, goals are likely to be scarce. Getafe have scored thirteen in sixteen away matches and 27 in the season overall. Sociedad's home scoring rate is much better, but they have faced few opponents this organised at keeping the ball out.

Fourth, Sociedad's defending at home has slipped. Six goals conceded in their last two home games, both of which ended 3-3, is a poor platform for a side that needs to win rather than trade.

Fifth, the table gives this a little edge without giving it urgency. A point between seventh and eighth with seven games left means the winner takes a place, but neither club is chasing anything that changes the shape of its season.

This is the thinnest of our selections this weekend and the write-up should say so. The argument for it is that Sociedad have won eight of sixteen at home, scored two a game there and beaten this opponent 2-1 in the reverse fixture in January. That is a reasonable base.

The arguments against are more numerous. Getafe sit a single point behind in the table and have collected twenty points away from home, winning at Real Madrid and Athletic along the way. They concede rarely and score rarely, which is the profile that turns matches into one-goal affairs. Sociedad have conceded three at home in each of their last two there. And Getafe have already won 3-0 at this ground within the last two seasons.

The price compounds it. 1.80 sits in one of the two odds bands where our published picks have returned the worst, and straight 1X2 selections have lost money across our record, so the reasoning needed to be stronger than it is.

The thing that beats it is Getafe doing exactly what they have done six times on the road already: defending well, taking one chance and winning 1-0 or 0-1.
