SC Freiburg vs FC Bayern München

Our record: SC Freiburg · FC Bayern München

Pre-Match Analysis

Head-to-Head

Four meetings sit on our record and Bayern won every one of them. They took the first 2-0 at home on 1 September 2024, then 2-1 at Freiburg on 25 January 2025. Last season produced the other two: 6-2 in Munich on 22 November 2025 and 3-2 at Freiburg on 4 April 2026. Four wins from four is not something to wave away, and it is the clearest single fact available about this fixture.

What interests us more is how the goals arrived. The 6-2 was level at 2-2 by half-time before the second half ran away from the visitors. The 3-2 at Freiburg was 0-0 at the break and then produced five goals after it. The January 2025 game at the same ground finished 1-2 from 0-1. Of the four meetings, three cleared two and a half goals, and both of the two played at Freiburg did: five goals in one, three in the other. The only low-scoring game in the set was the 2-0 in Munich, which is the one fixture in the group least like this one.

So the direct record carries two messages that do not conflict. Bayern tend to win these, and these tend to have goals in them.

Form Guide

The 2025/26 table put six places and forty-two points between the clubs. Bayern were champions on 89 points from twenty-eight wins, five draws and a single defeat, with 122 scored and 36 conceded for a difference of +86. Freiburg finished seventh on 47 points, thirteen wins, eight draws and thirteen defeats, 51 scored and 57 conceded for −6. A club with a negative goal difference qualifying as the seventh-best side in the division tells you how last season's middle looked.

This season has produced six matches each, which is a real sample rather than the two-game noise of late August, though it is still only six. Freiburg sit third on 13 points from four wins, a draw and a defeat, 15 scored and 6 conceded. They beat Werder Bremen 4-1 at home on 30 August, won 1-0 at Paderborn on 5 September, put five past Mönchengladbach without reply on 12 September, drew 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt on 19 September, beat Schalke 2-1 at home on 11 October and then lost 2-1 at Leverkusen on 18 October.

Bayern lead the table on 14 points from four wins and two draws, unbeaten, with 22 scored and 5 conceded. They opened 5-1 against Stuttgart at home on 28 August, drew 0-0 at Schalke on 5 September, won 2-1 at Elversberg on 13 September, beat Union Berlin 7-0 at home on 18 September, drew 2-2 at Augsburg on 10 October and beat Leipzig 6-1 at home on 17 October. One point separates the two clubs in the standings.

Key Factors

The first factor is Bayern's split, and it is stark. Their three home games produced eighteen goals scored and two conceded. Their three away games produced four scored and three conceded, and five points from nine. Three matches is a thin sample and we say so plainly, but the pattern is that Bayern away have been efficient rather than overwhelming: a goalless afternoon at Schalke and a 2-2 at Augsburg are not the performances of a side that scored 122 last season.

Second, Freiburg at home have been excellent and loud. Three games, three wins, eleven scored and two conceded, and every one of the three cleared two and a half goals. Their league position is built almost entirely at this ground.

Third, the goals arithmetic across the whole sample. Five of Freiburg's six matches have produced three goals or more, and so have five of Bayern's six. The exceptions are a 1-0 win at Paderborn and the 0-0 at Schalke. Bayern's six matches have averaged 4.5 goals apiece, Freiburg's 3.5.

Fourth, what the fixture means. This is matchday seven, nothing is decided, and the top of the table is tight enough that Freiburg are a point behind the leaders. That matters because it removes the main argument for a cagey game: a third-placed side at home does not need to sit in and protect a goalless draw against the champions, and neither meeting at this ground was that kind of game.

Fifth, the caveat we attach to every October preview. A summer of squad turnover sits between last season's 57 conceded and this season's six in six, and we cannot measure it from the table. One of those numbers is a thirty-four-match sample and the other is not.

Our Verdict

We take Over 2.5 Goals at 1.45 with medium confidence. Two sides whose matches have cleared the line five times in six, a ground where both previous meetings produced three goals or more, and a home team scoring at nearly four a game in front of its own crowd — the total is the part of this fixture we have evidence for. Picking the result is harder: Bayern have won four straight in this fixture and are unbeaten, but they have also dropped four of nine away points, and SC Freiburg have not lost at home this season. We would rather bet the thing both of those readings agree on.

Our own settled record is supportive without being decisive. Over/under is the best market in our book across 45 settled picks, and the 1.45–1.60 band has come in close to level rather than losing. Neither sample is large enough to pick a market on, and we would not have taken the line if the fixture argued against it.

The thing that beats this is FC Bayern München away. Their three road games have averaged 2.33 goals, one of them was a 0-0, and Freiburg have conceded twice at home all season. A controlled 1-0 or 2-0 for the visitors is entirely within the range of what both clubs have already produced, and that is the scenario that kills the bet. It is why this is medium and not high.
