Sevilla FC vs Real Sociedad

March 2024 produced the highest-scoring of these meetings, Sevilla winning 3-2 on this ground after leading 2-1 at the interval, and it is also one of the rare occasions when the host club took the points at all. Real Sociedad won the reverse fixture 2-1 in San Sebastián on 24 October, having already led at the break. Before that, in March 2025, Sevilla travelled north and won 1-0 with the only goal arriving after half-time. In November 2024 Real Sociedad came here and won 2-0, and the oldest of the five, in November 2023, finished 2-1 to Real Sociedad at home.

The away team has won three of the last five and the home team two, with no draw anywhere in the sequence — worth pausing on, because the selection here leans partly on the draw. Fourteen goals across five games is a shade under three a match, and both sides scored in three of the five. The two visits Real Sociedad have made to Seville in the sample split one apiece, so ground advantage has settled little.

Last season the two finished five points apart in the lower half: Real Sociedad twelfth on 46 with a minus-eleven goal difference, Sevilla sixteenth on 41 with minus thirteen. Neither has improved on that trajectory. Sevilla come into this thirty-third-round fixture eighteenth on 34 points, nine won, seven drawn, seventeen lost, goal difference minus fifteen. Real Sociedad are ninth on 43 from eleven wins, ten draws and twelve defeats, with goals for and against exactly level.

The splits explain a great deal. Sevilla have taken 19 of their 34 points at home from sixteen matches — five wins, four draws, seven defeats — which is modest but not disastrous, and includes a 4-1 win over Barcelona in October and a 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid on 11 April. Their away record is the sinkhole: four wins in seventeen. Real Sociedad are the mirror image and then some. Twenty-eight of their 43 points have come at home; on the road they have won three of sixteen, drawn six and lost seven for fifteen points in total. Those three away wins came at Osasuna, Getafe and Mallorca.

Recent form gives neither side much to lean on. Sevilla have won once in their last six — that Atlético result — and have lost at Oviedo, at Levante and at Osasuna in the run-up, the last of those 2-1 on 26 April. Real Sociedad have one win in five, a 2-0 home victory over Levante on 4 April, followed by a 3-3 home draw with Alavés, a 1-0 home defeat to Getafe on 22 April and a 3-3 draw at Rayo Vallecano four days later. Two 3-3 draws inside a fortnight is not the profile of a side about to shut a game down.

The first factor is the table, and it cuts against the pick. Sevilla sit eighteenth with five matches remaining. Every point from here is worth more to them than anything Real Sociedad can gain in ninth. And whatever else is wrong with their season, this ground has not been a soft touch: Barcelona were beaten 4-1 here in October and Atlético Madrid 2-1 in April.

The second is Real Sociedad's travelling record, which is the single strongest argument for the selection. Three wins in sixteen away matches, and six draws, means they have avoided defeat in nine of sixteen on the road. That is a side that turns up, absorbs and takes a point more often than it wins — which is precisely the shape of outcome a double chance rewards.

The third is the goals profile. Real Sociedad have scored and conceded the same number across thirty-three matches, and their last two outings produced seven goals against. Sevilla have conceded fifteen more than they have scored. Neither defence is reliable, and the head-to-head sample supports an open game rather than a tight one.

The fourth is what the fixture means to the visitors. Ninth on 43 points with five to play is a position where finishing seventh, eighth or tenth changes very little, and where a squad thirty-three matches deep has reasons to conserve. That does not favour a bet on them winning; it does little damage to a bet that includes the draw.

Our published pick is Double Chance X2 (Real Sociedad or Draw) at 1.55 with medium confidence, and the case for it rests on Sevilla's inability to win at home more often than they lose there. Five wins in sixteen home matches means the home side has failed to win eleven of sixteen — a shade under seventy per cent, against a price that needs a little under sixty-five. That is an edge, but a thin one, and it is the whole edge.

The weaknesses are worth naming. Real Sociedad's own away form supports the selection much less than the table gap suggests: nine non-defeats in sixteen is barely better than a coin toss. The price also sits in the 1.45–1.60 band, where our published picks have performed worst, at minus eleven per cent return. Double chance is one of only two markets in which our published picks have returned a profit, which is why we take this shape rather than back the visitors outright, but a price at the wrong end of the range eats most of that advantage. Medium confidence is honest; high would not have been.

The one thing that beats it is motivation. A club eighteenth with five games left, at home, against opponents with nothing pressing to chase, is the classic setup for a result the season's numbers would not forecast — and Sevilla have already produced two of those at this ground this season.
