Sunderland AFC vs Leeds United FC

Our record: Sunderland AFC · Leeds United FC

Pre-Match Analysis

Head-to-Head

Three goals in total across the two meetings our record holds. Sunderland won 1-0 at the away side's ground on 3 March 2026 after a goalless first half, and the two drew 1-1 at this ground on 28 December 2025, with the home side leading at the interval. One of those was settled by the only goal of the afternoon; the other was level by the end of it.

That is a small sample and we will say so rather than dress two matches up as a trend. What it does do is point in exactly the same direction as the rest of the evidence below, which is the useful thing about it: neither meeting reached three goals, and Sunderland did not lose either.

Form Guide

Sunderland finished 2025/26 seventh on 54 points — fourteen wins, twelve draws and twelve defeats. The detail that matters is the rest of that line: 42 scored and 48 conceded, a goal difference of −6. They finished seventh on the fewest goals scored of any club in the top half, which tells you how they got there.

Leeds finished fourteenth on 47 points, with eleven wins, fourteen draws and thirteen defeats, 49 scored and 56 conceded, −7. Fourteen draws from thirty-eight, and only one club in the whole division drew more.

Seven matches into this season, Sunderland are nineteenth on four points with six scored and fourteen conceded, a goal difference of −8. They lost 2-1 at Ipswich on 22 August, beat Fulham 1-0 at home on 30 August, drew 1-1 at Brentford on 5 September, lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal on 12 September, lost 5-3 at Manchester City on 20 September, lost 2-0 at home to Brighton on 10 October and lost 2-0 at Bournemouth on 18 October. One win, one draw, five defeats, and four straight losses to close that run.

Leeds are seventh on ten points with nine scored and six conceded, +3. They won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, drew 1-1 at home with Brentford, drew 1-1 at Brighton, beat Newcastle 4-1 at home on 14 September, drew 0-0 at home with Crystal Palace on 20 September, lost 2-1 at Arsenal on 10 October and drew 1-1 at home with Manchester United on 18 October. Two wins, four draws, one defeat.

Key Factors

The first is the home side's attack, which has essentially stopped. Sunderland have scored one goal in three matches at this ground all season — the 1-0 against Fulham in August — and have been shut out in the two since. Six goals in seven matches overall, and half of those came in a single away match at Manchester City. Strip that one out and they have three goals in their other six.

The second is how Leeds travel. Three away matches, three single-goal returns: 1-0 at Forest, 1-1 at Brighton, 2-1 defeat at Arsenal. Three scored and three conceded in total, which is as low-volume an away profile as there is in the division at this point. Their one high-scoring afternoon, the 4-1 against Newcastle, came at their own ground.

Third, the match totals themselves, which are the most direct evidence available. Five of Sunderland's seven matches have finished with two goals or fewer in them, and five of Leeds's have done the same. Each club has two exceptions, and they look nothing like this fixture: for Sunderland a 2-1 defeat at Ipswich on the opening weekend and the 5-3 at Manchester City, for Leeds the 4-1 against Newcastle and a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal.

Fourth, the draw habit on the away side. Leeds have drawn four of seven this season and fourteen of thirty-eight last. A club that keeps arriving at 1-1 and 0-0 is a club whose matches sit under this line by default, and all four of their draws this season were 1-1 or 0-0.

Fifth, the counter-signal, and the only real one. Sunderland have conceded fourteen goals in seven matches and eleven in their last four. A defence leaking at that rate can push a total past two and a half on its own, without any help from a Leeds attack that has not needed to score more than once away from home.

Our Verdict

We take Under 2.5 Goals at 1.68 with high confidence. Sunderland have one goal from three home matches and three from their six non-Manchester City fixtures; Leeds United have scored exactly one goal in each of their three away trips; five of seven matches on each side have landed under this line; and both meetings between the clubs on our record finished with three goals between them in total.

Our settled book is the right way round here for once. Over/under strikes at 62.2 percent across 45 picks for roughly plus eight percent, the best market in the record, and the 1.60–1.80 band it sits in has returned about minus two — so the market helps and the price mildly does not. Forty-five picks is not a large sample, and we would take this on the fixture evidence even if the market figure were flat.

High, because six readings point one way and the single objection is a goals-against column rather than a goals-for one. That objection is the thing that beats the pick: a side nineteenth and four matches without a point tends to concede in bunches, and if Leeds take an early lead at a ground where the home crowd turns and Sunderland have to chase, three goals arrive quickly. The safer version of this fixture — the one both clubs have played repeatedly — is 1-0 or 1-1.
