Verona vs Milan

Recent history in this fixture is one-sided to a degree that is unusual even between clubs sitting this far apart in the table. Milan have won the last five league meetings: 3-0 at San Siro on 28 December 2025, 1-0 at home on 15 February 2025, 1-0 at the Bentegodi on 20 December 2024, 3-1 at the same ground on 17 March 2024, and 1-0 in Milan on 23 September 2023. The aggregate across those five is 8-1, and the single Verona goal came more than two years ago, in the March 2024 defeat.

Two features of that run matter here. The first is that Verona have failed to score against Milan in three consecutive attempts, home and away. The second is that three of the five were settled by a single goal and produced two goals or fewer in total. December's 3-0 is the outlier rather than the pattern; the more typical version of this fixture has been Milan winning a tight, low-volume game without ever looking especially troubled.

The two most recent trips to the Bentegodi, in December 2024 and March 2024, both ended in Milan wins; on the record we hold, Verona have never taken a point off them at home.

Verona come into the round 19th on 18 points from 32 matches, with a goal difference of minus 32 that is among the worst in the division. Lecce, in 18th and on 27 points from the same number of games, are nine clear of them with six rounds left. April has been unkind: a 0-1 home defeat by Fiorentina on 4 April and a 1-2 loss at Torino on 11 April, following a 0-2 home defeat by Genoa on 15 March and a 1-0 loss at Atalanta on 22 March. The exception in that sequence was a 2-1 win at Bologna on 8 March, their first league victory of the calendar year.

Home form has produced far more defeats than points, broken up by stalemates. Among their Bentegodi results are 0-0 with Cremonese, 1-1 with Juventus, 2-2 with Cagliari and 0-0 with Pisa, plus a 3-1 win over Atalanta on 6 December that remains the high point of the season. They arrive, though, in poor order. The 0-3 home defeat by Udinese on 11 April was their heaviest result of the campaign and came five days after the loss in Naples. Across their last five they have two wins, 1-0 over Inter on 8 March and 3-2 over Torino on 21 March, against three defeats. Last season Milan finished eighth on 63 points; they have already matched that tally with six matches still to play.

The first factor is the gap in what the fixture is worth. Milan are third and in a live argument over the places at the top of the table, where a dropped point in late April costs far more than one in September, and two straight defeats sharpen that further. Verona, nine points from 18th with six to go, are approaching the stage where the table stops offering them much, and sides in that position are harder to read — occasionally stubborn, occasionally flat.

The second is the split within Milan's own season. They have lost three times at San Siro, the Udinese result among them, but only twice in sixteen away trips. Whatever has been going wrong has largely gone wrong at home, which is convenient for a side travelling this weekend.

The third is goals. Verona's minus 32 difference is not simply a story of heavy beatings; it is a season of not scoring. Against Milan specifically they have not managed a goal since March 2024. If this follows the shape of the previous meetings, one Milan goal settles it, and Verona have offered little recent evidence they can answer it.

The fourth is the counterweight, and it is not trivial. Milan's away record contains five draws, including 0-0 at Juventus, 1-1 at Atalanta, 2-2 at Parma, 1-1 at Fiorentina and 1-1 at Roma, all against sides that set out to contain them. A compact home side and a flat afternoon is a scenario this Milan team has walked into repeatedly.

The case for the visitors is straightforward and largely historical: five consecutive wins in the fixture, an away record that is the better half of their campaign, and an opponent whose season has been draining away for months. The case against is the state Milan are in — two defeats on the trot, one of them a 0-3 at home — and the habit Verona have of turning home games into draws rather than defeats.

We are backing Milan to win at 1.85 with medium confidence. It is not a comfortable price. A straight home-or-away call at 1.85 sits in one of the two price bands that have served this desk worst, and the honest reading is that the market is charging for Milan's league position while discounting how badly they have played over the last fortnight. The thing that beats it is the goalless or one-apiece afternoon: Verona have already drawn with Cremonese, Juventus, Cagliari and Pisa at the Bentegodi, this fixture has a long record of producing two goals or fewer, and Milan have not looked like a team that forces the issue once a match settles into a low rhythm.
