1. FC Köln 3-2 TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, and the shape of it sat almost entirely in the second half. The sides went in at 0-1, a single goal for the visitors and nothing for the hosts; the remaining four goals — three for Köln, one for Hoffenheim — came after the interval.

A first half that produced one goal and a second that produced four is not a match anybody controlled, and neither of these clubs finished last season looking like a side that controls matches. Köln were fourteenth in 2025/26 on 32 points, with 49 scored and 63 conceded; at their own ground they scored 30 and conceded 30 across seventeen matches, which is the ledger of a team that trades rather than defends. Three points on matchday one, and very little beyond that. This was the first round of the Bundesliga season, Köln's first competitive league fixture since finishing fourteenth and Hoffenheim's since finishing fifth, so the table it produces contains one match and carries no meaning yet.

What is worth logging is that the gap between fifth and fourteenth did not appear over ninety minutes, and that Köln's home scoring rate — the one genuinely encouraging figure in their 2025/26 record, 30 goals in seventeen matches at this ground — arrived immediately.

Hoffenheim leave with the opposite note. Their fifth-place finish was built on winning trades away from home rather than avoiding them, and the first trade of the new season went against them. One result revises neither club's standing. It does mean the side with the weaker record has the points.

Our pre-match call was Over 2.5 Goals at 1.57. Three separate measurements pointed the same way beforehand — a head-to-head averaging 3.1 goals across ten meetings, Köln's home matches averaging 3.53 last season, Hoffenheim's away matches 3.59 — and the match settled on five. The line was still unresolved at half-time with one goal on the board, which is the only uncomfortable stretch a total like this ever has; the second half cleared it and kept going.

The pick asked for very little. Not for Köln to win, not for Hoffenheim to be poor, not for the game to follow any particular script — only for both defences to be what they were last season. They were. Verdict: won
