1. FC Union Berlin 3-3 Eintracht Frankfurt, and the half-time score of 1-2 tells you that the six goals were spread across the match rather than piled up at one end of it. Union scored once and conceded twice before the interval, then found two more after it to pull a match level that they had been losing since the first half.

Six goals in a fixture that has averaged 2.56 across its last nine meetings is a departure from the norm, though not an unprecedented one — these two produced a 4-3 in Frankfurt in September 2025. What separates this one is that the visitors led at the break and did not hold it. Frankfurt's away campaign in 2025/26 read 4-7-6 with 32 goals scored and 38 conceded, the highest-scoring away environment in the division outside Stuttgart and Bayern, and a match that finished 3-3 after a 1-2 half-time is that ledger in miniature: enough attacking output to lead, not enough defensive control to keep it.

For Union the recovery is the notable half. An der Alten Försterei returned 26 goals scored and 26 conceded across seventeen matches last season, with seven draws — more home draws than any other Bundesliga club managed. Scoring twice after the interval to rescue a match is a different route to the same familiar result.

The opening round produced twenty-five goals across six matches, and this was the only one of them to end level after a side had trailed at the break.

A point each on matchday one, and very little beyond that. Union and Frankfurt finished last season eleventh and eighth, separated by five points, both with negative goal differences — minus 14 and minus 4 respectively. A shared 3-3 is consistent with that proximity rather than a correction to it.

The more useful reading is what neither side did. Frankfurt led at half-time away from home and came away with one point, which was the recurring shape of their 2025/26: eleven wins, eleven draws, twelve defeats, and seven of those draws collected on the road. Union, meanwhile, drew again at home, which they did seven times in seventeen last season. One round in, both clubs have reproduced the single most identifiable feature of their previous campaign, and that is worth more than the scoreline.

What it does not settle is anything about the table. One match played, one point each, and thirty-three still to come.

Our pre-match call was Draw at 3.40. It landed, by a route we had argued against.

The case rested on tightness: Union drew seven of seventeen at home, Frankfurt seven of seventeen away, and three of the last nine meetings finished level at 1-1, 1-1 and 0-0. We wrote that a level result in an open game usually reads 1-1, and we named Frankfurt's 4.12 goals a game on the road as the risk that would beat us. Six goals arrived, the match looked nothing like the low-event stalemate we described, and the draw came in anyway — through a two-goal recovery.

At 3.40 the market implied roughly 29 per cent against applicable splits above 41. The price was right for the wrong reason, which is worth recording rather than dressing up.
