A goalless afternoon at the Mewa Arena: 1. FSV Mainz 05 0-0 SC Paderborn 07, level at half-time and level at the end, with nothing in either half to give the ninety minutes a turning point.

The scoreline is the least surprising of the opening round if you read Mainz's home record rather than their league position. Tenth on 40 points sounds like a comfortable favourite against a promoted club. The split underneath it does not: four wins, five draws and eight defeats in seventeen matches at this ground, 21 goals scored and 25 conceded, 17 points from a possible 51. Twenty-one goals in seventeen home matches is 1.24 a game, and ten of those seventeen finished under two and a half. A goalless home draw is not an aberration in that record. It is the middle of it.

Paderborn still cannot be measured. They were not in this division last season, nothing we hold describes them at this level, and what happened here is one data point rather than the start of a picture. It says they were not broken down in their first away fixture back. It does not say how they will set up in October, or what the squad can sustain across a winter.

A point each on matchday one, and a first Bundesliga point of the campaign for the promoted side. That is the entire ledger. The season is exactly one round old; a goalless draw between a tenth-placed finisher and a newcomer moves nobody anywhere meaningful and would be a poor basis for a claim about either.

The more useful observation is one of continuity. Mainz's home form was the weakest of any club that finished in the top ten last season — weak enough that the only three clubs whose home return was no better were all relegated — and the first home match of the new campaign produced neither goals nor a win. One match is not evidence that a pattern is continuing. It is, at minimum, not evidence that it has been fixed.

For Paderborn, a clean sheet on the road at a top-flight ground is a reasonable first return, and it is the only thing about their season that can currently be stated as fact.

Our pre-match call was Under 2.5 Goals at 1.78. It landed with room to spare — a goalless draw is the most emphatic version of that result — and the reasoning behind it held up. Mainz's home matches averaged 2.71 goals in total last season, ten of seventeen went under the line, and a promoted side's first away trip is rarely the fixture that inflates a total.

The low confidence rating remains justified even in a win. We priced one measurable input against a complete blank on the visitors, and a correct result does not retroactively fill that blank. We know a little more about Mainz this morning and nothing at all more about Paderborn. Verdict: won
