Nothing separated these sides for forty-five minutes. AC Milan 2-0 Venezia FC was goalless at the interval, and the entire margin arrived after the break — the second Milan match in a week to follow that shape, after the 2-1 win at Torino five days earlier, also goalless at the break.

Two matches do not make a pattern, and we are not going to claim one from a sample that small. What the half-time score does confirm is the specific risk we identified before kick-off. Milan scored 1.32 goals a game at San Siro last season, the ordinary half of an otherwise strong campaign, and were held scoreless in three of nineteen home matches. A promoted side holding out into the second half is exactly the scenario in which that record has cost them before — five defeats and five draws at home in 2025/26. This time it did not.

For Venezia the result extends a sequence that now runs to five top-flight meetings with Milan without a goal: 0-2, 0-3, 0-4, 0-2 and now 0-2 again, thirteen goals to nil across the set. The caveat still applies: those fixtures span three seasons and squads turned over more than once, so the streak describes the shape of the tie rather than a continuous run of play. Venezia have also yet to score this season, having lost 0-2 at home to Lecce on the opening weekend, and a promoted club two matches in has no form line worth reading.

Six points from six for Milan, and their second win of the season by two clear goals against a side beneath them. Last year they finished fifth on 70 points, one behind Como and one ahead of Juventus, so a maximum start is a continuation rather than a statement. Thirty-eight of Milan's 70 points last season came away from home; both wins this time were secured after the interval, one on the road and one at San Siro.

For Venezia, two matches and no goals is a bad start but not a diagnostic one. They were not in Serie A in 2025/26, which means there is no top-flight baseline to measure them against and no honest way to say whether an opening pair of defeats to Lecce and Milan reflects the level of the squad or the difficulty of the draw. Two rounds settle very little at the bottom of the table.

The case was straightforward: Milan finished fifth on 70 points, Venezia had no Serie A season behind them at all, and the four previous meetings ended 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 and 2-0 without the visitors scoring.
