The right winner at the wrong margin: Arsenal 1-0 Burnley. The only goal came in the first half — the interval score was 1-0 — and the second produced nothing at either end. That is the shape of an evening in which the leaders got ahead, then did not extend it across the remaining forty-five minutes.

The pre-match Premier League table made the margin the only real question. Arsenal were top on 79 points from 36 games at +42; Burnley were nineteenth on 21 at -36. Burnley leave with nothing except a scoreline that flatters the season behind it. They stay on 21 points from 37 with a difference of -37 and a ceiling of 24 from the final round. Nineteenth place, two clear of the club below them before this weekend, is the limit of what remains in their hands, and losing at the league leaders was always the likelier of the two outcomes they faced. Holding them to one changes the arithmetic not at all.

Our pre-match call was Arsenal -2 (Asian Handicap) at 1.85: a win by three or more to land, a two-goal win to refund, anything less to lose. A 1-0 loses outright. The case had been base rates — six of Arsenal's eighteen home matches had finished three or more clear, three more exactly two apart — pushed above that frequency by the quality gap and Burnley's away concessions. High confidence was the wrong setting for a bet the home record itself supported only a third of the time, and the preview said as much.
