Post-Match Analysis

Match Summary

The under was still alive at the interval and comfortably dead by the end. Aston Villa FC 1-2 Nottingham Forest FC, goalless at half-time, three goals after it. The order in which they arrived is not on record, so nothing can be said about who led, or for how long, beyond the fact that the first forty-five produced nothing and the second produced everything.

Villa began the day eighteenth on a single point from three, with a goal difference of minus five and, more to the point, no goals at all. Forest were sixteenth on two points, minus one. Both figures were absurd against last season's table — Villa fourth on 65 points, Forest sixteenth on 44, twenty-one points apart — and this result is the first evidence of the season that the gap is not simply reasserting itself on schedule.

Villa did at least score. Four matches into the campaign, their first goal of the season arrived, which ends the more alarming of the two streaks they carried in. It did not end the other one: they have a point from four and have now been beaten at home by both Arsenal and Forest, having conceded four before the break at Brighton on the opening weekend.

For Forest it is a first win. Two goals away from home is as many as they had managed in their opening three matches combined, and it came at a ground where our record shows them losing 3-1 in January 2026 and 2-1 in April 2025. On the sample available, this is the first time they have won at Villa.

What It Settled

Forest move to five points from four, Villa stay on one. The two clubs that finished twenty-one points apart in May have swapped which of them looks the more functional, and four matches is far too little to say whether that means anything — but a month is now long enough that it cannot be waved away as a slow first weekend either.

What it does not settle is the division. This is the fourth round of the season, with thirty-four matches still to play; no table produced in mid-September survives contact with October. The meaningful statement is narrower: Villa have taken one point from four fixtures having taken 65 from 38 last season, and Forest have beaten a side that finished above them for the first time this year.

The fixture itself also broke its own pattern. Three of the four previous meetings cleared two and a half goals; this makes four of five.

Prediction Review

Our pre-match call was Under 2.5 Goals at 1.75, rated low confidence, and it lost.

The misjudgement is easy to name because we named it ourselves and then went the other way. The preview flagged that Villa averaged just under three goals a match across last season and Forest a shade over two and a half, that three of four meetings had cleared the line, and that a goal drought "is exactly the sort of thing that ends without warning". All of that was the correct reading. We weighted a six-match sample of ten goals — four of them from one lopsided afternoon — above two full seasons of evidence pointing the other way.

Three matches without a Villa goal was not a scoring rate. It was a small number, and it corrected.

Verdict: lost
