Athletic Club 3-0 Club Atlético de Madrid: Primera Division Match Report, 5 September 2026

Nothing in the first half suggested what the second one produced. Athletic Club 3-0 Club Atlético de Madrid, goalless at the interval, three goals for the hosts after it, and a mirror image of the half Atlético themselves had produced at Sevilla a week earlier.

Athletic's opening fortnight had been the worst in the division: 1-3 at home to Sevilla, 2-0 away at Barcelona, no points, five conceded. The third match changed the shape of it, a 2-0 win at Celta, and this was the second consecutive win and the second consecutive clean sheet. Two matches of evidence pointing one way followed by two pointing the other is not a trend in either direction; it is a small sample doing what small samples do.

Atlético arrived with seven points from three — 2-0 at home to Málaga, 2-2 with Villarreal, 3-1 away at Sevilla — and a +4 difference, unbeaten. Here they scored in neither half.

The season behind them still says the visitors are the better side by a distance: Atlético fourth on 69 points last May, Athletic twelfth on 45 with nineteen defeats, twenty-four points and eight places apart. The fixture history was more balanced than that, though — Athletic won 1-0 at home in December, Atlético 3-2 at home in April, both legs decided by the side not travelling.

Athletic have six points from four and a goal difference back to +1, having been on nought points and -4 a week and a half ago. That is a real swing, and it is also four matches. A club that lost nineteen league games last season is not re-rated by two wins, but the two wins do mean their bottom-of-the-table start was mostly a fixture list — Sevilla and Barcelona — rather than a diagnosis.

Atlético take their first defeat and drop to seven points from four, with the same +1 difference as the side that just beat them. Losing 3-0 anywhere is a bad afternoon; losing it at a ground where they lost in December last season is less of an outlier than the table gap implies. Nothing here disturbs 69 points and a fourth-place finish as the best estimate of what they are.

The case leaned on the twenty-four-point gap from last season and on Atlético being unbeaten, and it was assembled against an Athletic side that at the time of writing had no points at all. That figure had already stopped being true by kick-off. Our own preview identified the counter-evidence and set it aside: the December 1-0 was called "the detail worth keeping", being the one occasion in the sample where Athletic kept a clean sheet against this opponent at home, and the match repeated it with two goals to spare. The failure was not the price — 1.36 for a double chance covering the stronger club is defensible — but the decision to weight a two-match league position over a fixture record that said the hosts win this one at home.
