Our preview of this match was written on 18 October 2026 but only went live on 1 November, after the final whistle. Its pick is reviewed below as it was written, and it is left out of our win rate and bankroll.
Match Summary
Athletic Club had played four home league matches this season without scoring a first-half goal. They had two by the interval here and two more after it: Athletic Club 4-0 Getafe CF, 2-0 at half-time and the same again in the second half.
At kick-off the clubs were level on nine points, Athletic fifteenth from eight matches with a goal difference of minus one, Getafe sixteenth from nine on minus six. Athletic had lost 3-1 at Levante four days earlier; Getafe had drawn 1-1 with Rayo Vallecano, their fifth home match of the season and the fifth in which they scored exactly once.
Away from home Getafe had not scored at all: four trips, four defeats, eight conceded. That now reads five, five and twelve, and four goals is one more than they let in at Alavés or Barcelona. Athletic's four is their own season high, one better than the 3-0 against Atlético Madrid in September, and took their tally from eight goals in eight matches to twelve in nine.
None of the four previous meetings on record had reached three goals, and Getafe had won the last two, including 1-0 at San Mamés a year earlier to the day. The old pattern held in one respect only: the side that scored first was the only one that scored.
What It Settled
Athletic now have twelve points from nine and a goal difference of plus three, with a game still in hand on Getafe. Four days earlier the defeat at Levante had taken them to minus one. One afternoon does not undo last season, when they finished twelfth on 45 points with a minus-15 difference, and a 4-0 against a side that has not scored away is a narrow test. What it does show is an attack capable of more than the two goalless draws before Levante suggested.
Getafe stay on nine points from ten and drop to minus ten. The shortage of goals is not new: they finished seventh on 51 last season with 32 scored, the second-lowest total in the division. The defence is the change, 38 conceded in 38 matches then and twelve in five away games now, with every one of their nine points taken at home.
Prediction Review
Our preview's call was Under 2.5 Goals at 1.55. The preview gave it high confidence.
It named the way it could fail and called it the exception: if Athletic scored early, the under would need Getafe to stay at zero and Athletic to stop at two. The half-time score is exactly that position, and the second half brought two more. The error was in reading Getafe's travels. Their 0-3 defeats were filed as matches where the total "stopped at three", when they were the warning: a side that cannot score away leaves the total wholly in the home team's hands, and half of Getafe's trips had already gone over the line. A price implying about a 65 per cent chance needed more than that.
Verdict: not counted. The pick would have lost, but the preview only went live after kick-off.
