Egypt advanced to a Round of 16 against Argentina and lost 3-2, taking a half-time lead before going out — the second consecutive knockout tie in which they scored first. Across five matches they scored eight goals and never lost inside ninety minutes until that Argentina defeat.

For Australia the tournament ends without a knockout defeat in open play. Four matches, three goals conceded in total, and elimination from twelve yards. Their attacking record — two goals in the group and one here — is what ultimately decided it: a side that cannot score twice in a knockout match is always one shoot-out away from going home.

This tie also completed the round's pattern. Three of sixteen Round of 32 matches went to penalties, and the sides eliminated by them were Germany, the Netherlands and Australia — two pre-tournament favourites and the most defensively frugal team in the competition.
