Seven goals, a half-time lead surrendered and a promoted club leaving with three points: Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-4 SV 07 Elversberg. The hosts were 2-1 up at the break; the second half produced four more goals and reversed the result.

Very little of that was in the preview, and it is worth being direct about why. Gladbach's measured profile was the opposite of this: twelfth on 38 points in 2025/26, a home record of 6-6-5 with 24 goals scored and 24 conceded in seventeen matches, and a home scoring rate of 1.41 a game that only five clubs in the division undercut. Three goals at home is more than double that rate, and conceding four is further outside the pattern still: 24 conceded at home across an entire campaign is about 1.4 a match.

For Elversberg there was nothing to measure at all. They were not in this division last season, our data does not cover the one they were in, and the head-to-head record our provider returns is an aggregate with no matches beneath it. What we now hold is two Bundesliga results, and the first of them was not available when the preview was written: Elversberg beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 at home on the opening weekend, two goals up at the interval, which is what had them sixth before kick-off. Then four goals away from home in their second match. Two results are still not a level.

Elversberg have six points from their first two matches in the division; Gladbach, beaten 3-0 at Leipzig in round one, have none. Two rounds is not a table; the honest version is that the promoted side has taken the maximum so far and the established one nothing.

What it dents is a specific assumption rather than a season. The preview argued that a promoted club playing its second match at this level, away from home, would usually set up to avoid defeat first. Elversberg did not, or if they did it does not show in the goal columns. That was inference rather than measurement, labelled as such, and wrong.

Two matches, no points, a goal difference of minus four — but a side that drew eleven of its 34 matches last season does not have the profile of one that keeps losing.

Our pre-match call was the Draw at 3.60, rated low confidence. The case was a single measured edge: Gladbach drew six of seventeen home matches last season and eleven of 34 overall, a 35 per cent home draw rate against a price implying about 28 per cent.

What was misjudged is that the draw rate came with a mechanism — 24 scored and 24 conceded at home, a side with no decisive edge in either direction — and this match had nothing in common with that mechanism. Seven goals in a fixture we expected to be low-event means the structural read failed, not that the coin landed badly. We also assumed a cautious visiting newcomer, when that newcomer had already put three past a side which finished sixth last season. We said at the time that skipping this fixture was a defensible response to half the inputs being missing. That advice reads better than the pick.
