The record gives the half-time and full-time scores and nothing more, so the sequence of those two second-half goals — who led, if anyone did — is not recoverable.

Brentford went into the weekend having beaten Tottenham 3-0 at home and drawn 1-1 at Leeds; Sunderland had lost 2-1 at Ipswich and beaten Fulham 1-0. Four points and three respectively, from two matches each, which is a sample far too small to rank anybody. The reasoning was home advantage plus a marginal edge on goal difference: Brentford at +3 against Sunderland at -6 last season, and a 3-0 home win already on the board this one. Excluding only the Sunderland away win at 1.40 was a reasonable expression of that, if not a generous price.

Where the case was weak is worth naming. Sunderland finished a point above Brentford last season, which does not obviously support treating them as the side to bet against, and the goal-difference argument was doing more work than one point of table separation could justify. The pick paid, but on the outcome that a closer reading would have identified as the most likely one anyway.
