Six group goals, one more against the Dutch, and a defensive record that had conceded three in four matches.

The Netherlands tie is what made this one. Morocco had just proved they could absorb sustained pressure from a top-tier attack for two hours, and they arrived against Canada with the confidence that produces.

Morocco advanced to a quarter-final against France and lost 2-0, goalless at half-time before conceding twice after the break — the same structure as this tie, with the roles reversed. Reaching the last eight having eliminated the Netherlands on penalties and dismissed Canada 3-0 is Morocco's strongest World Cup run in a generation.

For Canada the tournament ends in the last sixteen, which flatters neither the 6-0 against Qatar nor the three goals conceded here. Across five matches they beat Qatar and South Africa and lost to Switzerland and Morocco — the pattern of a side that handled weaker opposition and could not live with better.

This was also the widest margin in the Round of 16, a round otherwise made up of one-goal wins and a shoot-out.
