Three before the interval and three after it: Canada 6-0 Qatar was the highest-scoring match of Group B and the most one-sided result of the group stage outside Germany's 7-1 win over Curaçao. The rhythm was unusual. Most heavy wins are front-loaded, with the second half played at reduced intensity once the outcome is settled; this one produced exactly the same number of goals in each half.

Canada came in on one point after being held 1-1 by Bosnia-Herzegovina, a match in which they had trailed at the break. Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina both finished the group on four; Canada's plus five against Bosnia-Herzegovina's minus one is the separation, and five of the six goals scored here were surplus to the result itself.

Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 in the final round to take the group on seven, so this was never the platform for top spot it might have been. It was, though, the difference between advancing on goal difference and not advancing at all. Qatar's tournament effectively ended here; they lost 3-1 to Bosnia-Herzegovina in their last match and finished bottom.

Our pre-match call was Double Chance 1X (Canada or Draw) at 1.42. With hindsight this is the most heavily over-insured selection of the group. Canada won by six against a side that would concede ten across three matches, and the draw cover was worth precisely nothing.

The defence of the process is that Canada had just failed to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina at home and Qatar had just held Switzerland, so the available pre-match evidence pointed to a group in which nobody was winning comfortably. The defence of the result is simpler: it never mattered. At 1.42 for a match that finished 6-0, the pick was correct and the price was poor, and those two things sit together without contradiction.
