Post-Match Analysis
Match Summary
Chelsea FC 2-0 Manchester United FC, and nothing in it at half-time: 0-0 at the break, both goals after it. When in the second half they arrived is not recorded, only that they did. It was the same shape as Chelsea's 2-0 at Everton a fortnight earlier, goalless at the interval and decided after it.
It also answered a home defeat. Chelsea came into the match fifth on thirteen points from eight games, goal difference +2, a week after losing 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to Tottenham, their first home defeat of the season. Their home games before that had been open ones: 4-3 against Brighton, 2-2 against Hull, 5-1 against Bournemouth. This was the first time all season they had kept a clean sheet at home.
United were sixteenth on seven points, goal difference -3, and without a win since their 5-2 against Ipswich on 30 August. The six games after it brought four draws and two defeats, the most recent 3-0 at home to Bournemouth. They had not kept a clean sheet in any of their eight matches, so the two conceded here extend a run rather than start one. Away from home they had drawn three of four, the exception a 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend.
Last season United won both meetings, 2-1 at Old Trafford in September 2025 and 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in April. Chelsea's previous win in the fixture was 1-0 at home in May 2025.
What It Settled
Sixteen points from nine games for Chelsea, goal difference +4; seven for United, now -5. Chelsea were six points ahead at kick-off and are nine ahead now.
Measured against last season, the two clubs are heading in opposite directions. Chelsea finished tenth on 52 points, a rate that would have them on about twelve by now; they have sixteen. United finished third on 71, which over nine games is worth about seventeen; they have seven. Nineteen points separated them in May, with United ahead. Nine games in, the gap is nine the other way.
For United the detail behind the total matters more than the total: a single win, on 30 August, seven matches without another, and no goals in the last two, 3-0 and 2-0 defeats in successive weeks. Seven points from nine games is no verdict with twenty-nine still to play. It is, though, the start of a side that conceded fifty goals in thirty-eight matches last season and has already let in fifteen in nine.
Chelsea's own run is harder to read. They have not yet won three league games in a row this season; both of their pairs of wins so far were followed by a defeat.
There was no prediction from us on this one. The match fell on the weekend at the end of October when nothing new was going up on the site, and no call was ever made on it.
