Winning at a direct rival for the European places is worth more than the three points suggest, because it removes a competitor as well as adding to a total.

Chelsea stayed on 48 with the difference at +11. Six rounds remained and the gap to third was now ten, which is not fatal but requires a change of trajectory from a team that had now gone four matches without a win and four without a goal. The more immediate problem was underneath them: Brentford sat a single point back, and Chelsea's hold on sixth had become nominal.

Our pre-match call was Chelsea Win at 1.85. It lost, and the reasoning behind it was thinner than the price implied. We took the view that a home fixture against a United side who had just lost to Leeds and Newcastle was the natural place for Chelsea's slump to end, and we treated the goal drought as a blip rather than a trend. Three matches without scoring is a trend. Backing a team to win outright when they have not found the net in three attempts is a bet on a reversal with no evidence behind it, and at 1.85 there was no compensation for the risk. Verdict: lost
