Deportivo Alavés 1-0 Villarreal CF: Primera Division Match Report, 28 August 2026

Deportivo Alavés 1-0 Villarreal CF was decided before the interval and never reopened after it — a sixth consecutive meeting at Mendizorroza in which the visitors have failed to win, and the fourth of those six to finish with two goals or fewer.

The shape was the one the venue has produced for six years. Alavés led at half-time and did not concede, which their 2025/26 home record made plausible without making it likely: 7-6-6 across nineteen matches at Mendizorroza, twenty-five scored and twenty-five conceded, a ledger balanced to the goal. A single-goal home win is the median result of that profile rather than an upset of it.

Villarreal's side of it is about the calendar as much as the performance. This was their third fixture of the campaign and their third consecutive away match, after 2-2 at Racing Santander and 2-2 at Atlético Madrid, and they have now taken two points from the three. Last season they collected forty-six of their seventy-two points at their own ground and went 7-5-7 on the road with a negative goal difference — twenty-four scored in nineteen away matches, a rate of 1.26 a game. Failing to score in Vitoria is entirely consistent with that number; it is the fixture list, not a collapse, that has exposed it.

Three matches into a season is not a form line for either club. What the result does confirm is that the home-field rule in this fixture, unbroken since April 2021, has survived another test.

Seven points from three for Alavés, one goal conceded across the lot, and an early position near the top of a table that means very little in August. A side that finished fourteenth on 43 points last season has beaten Getafe 3-0, drawn at Rayo and beaten the club that finished third, which is a better opening fortnight than any projection would have given them.

For Villarreal it is two points from three away fixtures and a start that is worse than their season is likely to be. Third on 72 points, twenty-nine clear of today's opponents, with 15-1-3 at the Estadio de la Cerámica — the numbers that matter for them have not yet been tested, because they have not yet played at home.

The early table is therefore doing the opposite of informing: Alavés second, Villarreal ninth, a twenty-nine-point gap inverted on the strength of three matches, two of which Villarreal drew. Last season remains the better guide.

The reasoning was the venue rule and the split it produces: Alavés unbeaten in five previous meetings at Mendizorroza, twenty-seven home points last season against Villarreal's twenty-six on the road, and a third straight away fixture for a side that banks most of its points at home. We chose the double chance over the outright win specifically because two of those five meetings finished 1-1 and Alavés drew six of nineteen at home. The cover was not needed.

The risk we named — the twenty-nine-point gap finally asserting itself — did not arrive, and it remains the likeliest thing to break this pattern.
