Post-Match Analysis

Match Summary

A point behind Hamburg at kick-off, two points ahead of them by the end: Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 Hamburger SV. It was 1-1 at half-time, and who scored first is not known. What is clear is that Frankfurt scored the only two goals of the second half, so the whole margin was built after the break. There was no preview from us on this one; it fell on a weekend when the site was not being updated.

Neither club came in on solid ground. Frankfurt were fifteenth on eight points from seven games, goal difference -7, and almost all of that deficit came from one game, the 6-0 at Leipzig in October. Their home record was a win, a draw and a defeat, the defeat a 4-1 by Augsburg in September. Hamburg were thirteenth on nine points, goal difference -10, and their season had come in distinct phases: three defeats without a goal, 2-0, 5-0 and 5-0, then three straight wins, over Köln, at Hoffenheim and over Stuttgart, then a 1-0 defeat at Paderborn the previous weekend.

For Frankfurt this is a second home win in a row, after the 1-0 over Köln in mid-October, and three goals equals their best return in any game this season. For Hamburg it is a second straight defeat after that winning run, and a fourth defeat in five away games, the exception the 3-2 at Hoffenheim.

It also reverses the recent head-to-head. Hamburg had won 2-1 in Frankfurt in May, after a 1-1 in Hamburg in December, so this is Frankfurt's first win over them in three meetings since the start of last season.

What It Settled

The order between the two clubs flips: Frankfurt go to eleven points from eight games and Hamburg stay on nine. Frankfurt's goal difference improves from -7 to -5 and Hamburg's slips from -10 to -12. With 78 points still available to each, the result reshapes this part of the table without deciding anything in it.

Against last season, both clubs are close to where they were. Frankfurt finished eighth on 44 points, and eleven from eight is a slightly better rate, about 47 across 34 games, with the 6-0 at Leipzig the outlier in an otherwise ordinary goal record. Hamburg finished thirteenth on 38, and nine from eight is almost exactly that pace again, roughly 38 over a season. The route has been unusual, though: three defeats, three wins, two defeats. Their goals column is the weakest part of it: seven scored and nineteen conceded in eight games, scoring more than once in only two of them, and twelve of the nineteen against came in the first three matches.

Eight games is under a quarter of the season, and nobody has played their way into or out of anything yet.
