Post-Match Analysis

Published Late

Our preview of this match was written on 18 October 2026 but only went live on 1 November, after the final whistle. Its pick is reviewed below as it was written, and it is left out of our win rate and bankroll.

Match Summary

Nine league matches, nine wins, 39 goals, and in none of them had FC Barcelona been behind at half-time. Real Madrid CF led at the interval here and were still ahead at the end: FC Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid CF, 0-1 at the break and a goal each after it.

The perfect record goes, and a scoring run with it: Barcelona had scored at least twice in every league match this season, and this was the first time they managed only one. It was also the first second half of their season that they started behind.

Madrid arrived third on 21 points from nine, six behind the leaders, with a goal difference of plus 14 against plus 30. They had won both matches since losing at Atlético in September. Their away record now has a shape of its own: five played, three won, two lost, every one by a single goal — 2-1 at Espanyol, 0-1 at Betis, 3-2 at Elche, 1-2 at Atlético and this. They have still not drawn a league match.

The head-to-head pointed the other way. Barcelona had won both previous home meetings on record, 4-3 in May 2025 and 2-0 in May 2026. The one Madrid win among the four Clásicos before this, at the Bernabéu a year earlier, was also 2-1 with Madrid ahead at the break.

What It Settled

Barcelona are still top on 27 points from ten, plus 29, but the gap to Madrid is down from six points to three; Madrid move to 24, plus 15. With 28 matches left that is no margin at all, and an October Clásico decides nothing mathematically. Last season's table is the better guide to scale: Barcelona champions on 94, Madrid second on 86, Villarreal a distant third on 72.

What changes is the evidence. Barcelona's start rested on a perfect record and on scoring at a rate nobody else in the division approached; the second still stands, the first does not, and the side that ended it is last season's runner-up. For Madrid, a perfect home record had been carrying an away record of two wins and two defeats. Winning away at the leaders is the result that most improves that half of their season.

Prediction Review

Our preview's call was FC Barcelona Win at 1.72. The preview rated it high, on nine wins from nine, a strong home record, three shared opponents and two home Clásico wins in a row.

The weakness was in what those strands measured. A perfect record and better scorelines against Betis and Elche describe how Barcelona dealt with weaker sides; Madrid were the only club within ten points of them last season. The preview's last paragraph was the better analysis: it called a 2-1 either way the most likely shape, a thin margin on which to stake a favourite's price, and noted that Madrid score away whatever the result. It then rated the pick high anyway. At a price implying about 58 per cent, medium was the grade that argument supported.

Verdict: not counted. The pick would have lost, but the preview only went live after kick-off.
