Match Summary
FC Bayern München 2-2 Borussia Dortmund: the top two met level on 17 points and parted level on 18. Bayern led 1-0 at half-time and the second half went 2-1 to Dortmund. The order of those three second-half goals is not on record, so whether Dortmund came back from two down, went ahead and were pegged back, or traded goals all the way is something the score cannot tell you. It says only that Dortmund outscored the champions after the interval at the Allianz Arena.
Both arrived unbeaten, with five wins and two draws each, but by very different routes. Bayern's goal difference of +19 was built largely at home, where they had beaten Stuttgart 5-1, Union 7-0 and Leipzig 6-1, eighteen goals for and two against in three games; their only dropped points had come away, 0-0 at Schalke and 2-2 at Augsburg. Dortmund had scored twelve and conceded four, a goal difference of +8, and their draws had come against Werder Bremen at home and at Union.
Measured against Bayern's home form this season, the draw is the deviation: their first home game without a win, and the first at home in which they conceded more than once. Measured against the fixture, it is ordinary. The four previous meetings had gone 1-1 and 2-2 in 2024/25, then 2-1 and 3-2 to Bayern last season, so Dortmund are now without a win against them in five, three of them draws.
What It Settled
For the title, nothing yet. Bayern and Dortmund are level on 18 points from eight games and both still unbeaten, with Bayern ahead on goal difference, +19 against +8. Each has 26 games and 78 points left to play, and a draw between the top two at the end of October cannot decide where the title goes.
Last season Bayern were champions on 89 points with one defeat in 34 games, and Dortmund finished second on 73, sixteen points behind. Eight games into this one there is no gap at all. Bayern are taking 2.25 points a game against 2.6 last season, while Dortmund's 2.25 is slightly above their own 2.1. Eight matches cannot say whether the balance between the clubs has shifted, and the eleven-goal gap on goal difference in Bayern's favour is a reminder that level points do not mean level sides. Dortmund's defence, though, has conceded six in eight, two fewer than Bayern's.
It was the obvious fixture of the round to call, and we did not: no previews went up that weekend, so this page records the result without a pick attached.
