At half-time this was the scoreline we had spent a preview worrying about. FC Bayern München 5-1 VfB Stuttgart finished four goals apart; at the interval it was 1-0, one goal in forty-five minutes and the total sitting two short of the line. Five goals followed the restart.

That split is the whole match. Conceding five is not the shape of Stuttgart's 2025/26, when they shipped 49 across 34 matches, but conceding heavily in Munich is now a repeated event rather than an aberration.

Three points on matchday one for the reigning champions, which settles nothing and confirms plenty. Bayern won 28 of 34 last season, lost once and finished sixteen points clear; a home win over the side that finished fourth is a continuation of that, not news.

For Stuttgart the more useful framing is that this was the hardest away fixture in the division, taken first. Fourth place on 62 points with a plus-22 goal difference was a good season, and the away half of it — 6-5-6 with 41 scored — described a side that trades rather than contains. Trading at the Allianz Arena is how you end up losing 5-1, and it does not follow that the same approach will cost them anywhere else.

One round is one round. The table after matchday one is a formality, and last season's finish still says these are the first and fourth best sides in the division.
