Nothing before the interval and nothing after it: FC Schalke 04 0-0 FC Bayern München, the second-round fixture in which the champions did not score and the promoted side did not concede.

The recorded history of this pairing made that outcome look remote. Five meetings sit in our data, running from January 2020 to May 2023: Bayern won all five, four of them by at least four goals, and Schalke did not score in any. The margin had never been smaller than two.
