Post-Match Analysis
Match Summary
RB Leipzig's season had followed a strict pattern: four home games won by a combined 18-0, three away games lost by a combined 11-2. Gelsenkirchen broke it. FC Schalke 04 0-2 RB Leipzig was a goal in each half, 1-0 at the interval and 2-0 at the end, and Leipzig's first away win of the season.
The table had the clubs ten places and six points apart. Leipzig started the day sixth on 12 points, goal difference +9. Schalke, one of the three promoted clubs, were sixteenth on six with a goal difference of -3, and conceding had not been their problem: seven goals against in seven games, one a game, is a respectable rate for any side. Scoring was. They had four goals all season, three of them in a 3-1 win at Union in September, and none at all in their three home games, which had finished 0-0 with Bayern, 0-0 with Elversberg and 0-1 against Mainz.
That is the starkest line in this result. Four home games, no home goals, and a run without a win that now stretches to five since the victory in Berlin: two draws and three defeats. Whether Schalke came close at any point, the score alone cannot show.
For Leipzig the venue was the point. Their three previous away games had brought defeats at Werder Bremen, Leverkusen and Bayern, the last of them 6-1, and every clean sheet they had kept had come at home. Two goals and nothing conceded on the road is the first sign this season that the side who win so comfortably at home can do it away as well.
What It Settled
Leipzig move to 15 points from eight games and a goal difference of +11; Schalke stay on six, with theirs down to -5, and the gap between them widens from six points to nine. It is also Leipzig's first run of two straight wins this season, after the 4-0 over Elversberg the previous Saturday.
Last season Leipzig finished third on 65 points. Fifteen from eight is almost exactly that rate, just under two points a game, so their season so far is less a change of level than a lopsided route to the same place: dominant at home, beaten away, until now.
For Schalke, the arithmetic is still forgiving even if the trend is not. Six from eight would come to about 25 by May, a total that usually means trouble, but 26 rounds remain. Nine conceded in eight games has kept most of their matches within a goal or two; four scored in eight is why so few of them have been won. Nothing was decided at the bottom here, and in October nothing could have been.
We had nothing out on this one, because the site went without updates that weekend, so there is no call to hold against the result.
