Fulham FC 2-3 Chelsea FC: Premier League Match Report

The opening round of the Premier League closed with its highest-scoring match: Fulham FC 2-3 Chelsea FC, a west London derby that Chelsea led 2-1 at half-time and held to the end.

Five goals is not what the two records suggested. Fulham and Chelsea finished 2025/26 level on 52 points, eleventh and tenth, separated by nothing except goal difference, and the pre-match case rested on Fulham's home split: 11-2-6 at Craven Cottage, 30 scored and 20 conceded, against 4-5-10 away. Six home defeats in nineteen was the load-bearing number, and the new season opened with another.

Chelsea's own record offered no obvious reason to expect them to travel with authority. Their 2025/26 split was almost eerily balanced — 7-5-7 at home, 7-5-7 away — though the one asymmetry in it was that they scored more away goals (32) than home ones (26). That is the part of their profile this match repeated: three away goals from a side whose road scoring was the healthier half of its season.

The half-time score is where the match was effectively decided. Both teams had scored inside the first period and Chelsea led it, which put Fulham into precisely the situation the pre-match note flagged as fatal to them. Chasing is what their away record says they do badly, and having to do it at home took the value out of the split that made them worth backing.

One match into a season, not much, and the two clubs remain what the table said they were in May: level on points, mid-table, neither with a decisive edge over the other.

What it does remove is the most convenient shorthand for this fixture. Fulham lost six home matches across the whole of last season and beat this same opponent at this ground four months before it ended; opening the new campaign with a home derby defeat does not undo an 11-2-6 record, but it does mean the reliability of that record is a question rather than an assumption.

For Chelsea, three away goals and three points is a better start than tenth place on 52 points would lead anyone to expect, and it is consistent with the one genuinely good element of last season — their away scoring. Whether it means more will take another ten matches to establish.

The reasoning was that Fulham lost six of nineteen at Craven Cottage while Chelsea's away record was a coin flip, and that a tight derby on a small pitch would compress the visitors' advantages. The match was indeed close and turned on narrow margins.

What we got wrong was treating a full-season home split as though it transfers intact to the first fixture of a new one. An 11-2-6 record accumulated over nine months is a description of a settled side, and August is when sides are least settled — a caveat we applied to Chelsea's form but not to Fulham's home record. We also named the losing scenario correctly and then watched it happen: Chelsea leading at the break left Fulham chasing, which is the thing their numbers say they do worst.
