Genoa CFC 0-2 SSC Napoli: Serie A Match Report

Marassi finally produced the quiet evening it had refused to produce for five years: Genoa CFC 0-2 SSC Napoli, goalless at the interval and settled by two second-half goals without a reply.

The five previous meetings at this ground had finished 2-3, 1-2, 2-2, 1-2 and 2-1 — eighteen goals, both sides scoring every time. This one broke both halves of that record at once. Opening day, so the honest answer is little. Napoli have three points and Genoa none, and neither figure describes a level yet. The 35-point gap between second and sixteenth last season remains the better guide to these clubs than one evening in August.

What the result does is start each side's season in character. Napoli's away record was the sturdiest part of a 76-point campaign, and they opened by reproducing it exactly — a clean sheet on the road, a game managed rather than won in a shootout. Genoa spent last season surviving on a home record of six wins in nineteen and a habit of trading goals; losing at Marassi without scoring removes both the points and the pattern.
