That contrast is what makes the result. Germany's group produced ten goals; Paraguay's produced two. Over 120 minutes of knockout football, the team that had barely scored all tournament matched the team that could not stop scoring, and then won the shoot-out.

Paraguay's reward was a Round of 16 against France, which they lost 1-0 after another goalless first half. Their tournament therefore ends with a pattern of extreme defensive discipline and almost no attacking output: across five matches they scored three goals in total and still reached the last sixteen.

For Germany it is an elimination that will define the campaign. Losing 2-1 to Ecuador in the final group match sent them into this half of the bracket, and a first knockout tie decided on penalties ended a tournament in which they had not been beaten inside ninety minutes.
