Haiti 0-1 Scotland: FIFA World Cup Match Report

Scotland scored one goal at this World Cup, and it happened here. Haiti 0-1 Scotland was decided before half-time and stayed that way, a single strike that turned out to be the whole of Scotland's attacking return from three group matches and the only three points they took from the tournament.

The interval score was already 0-1, so this was not a late winner against a side that had held firm. Scotland led early and then held what they had for forty-five minutes against opposition that needed to chase, and they did so successfully — the only clean sheet either team kept in Group C.

Both sides finished the group stage without a second win. Scotland lost 1-0 to Morocco and 3-0 to Brazil after this, closing on three points with a 1:4 goal record. Haiti lost 3-0 to Brazil and 4-2 to Morocco, finishing bottom without a point at 2:8.

The comparison inside those numbers is odd enough to note: Haiti scored twice across the group stage and Scotland once, and Scotland finished three points and one place above them. The margin between the two teams over three matches each came down to the ninety minutes they played against one another.

Group C went to Brazil on seven points and Morocco on seven, the two of them separated by goal difference after a 1-1 draw between them on the opening day. Scotland's three points here left them third and Haiti bottom, and neither position changed once Brazil and Morocco had taken care of the remaining fixtures.

For Scotland the result was the difference between finishing third and finishing bottom, which is not nothing, but it was never going to be more than that. Two subsequent defeats without scoring meant the three points banked in the opening match were the entirety of their tournament. For Haiti it removed the only realistic source of points on their schedule — the two matches that followed were against the sides that would finish first and second.

The reasoning was that this was the group's most evenly matched fixture and the one in which a point was genuinely available to either side. Scotland's subsequent record — no goals across two further matches, three points from three — suggests that read on their attacking limitations was not wrong. What we underrated was that a team with one goal in it can still win a match with it, and that a half-time lead against a side who would score twice in the entire group stage is close to unassailable.
