Norway advanced to face Brazil in the Round of 16 and beat them 1-2, the standout result of the entire tournament, before pushing England to extra time in the quarter-final. A team that conceded seven goals in the group stage reached the last eight by winning three consecutive one-goal matches.

For Ivory Coast it ends a tournament in which their defensive discipline was never the problem. Two goals conceded in the group is a top-tier record; the issue was an attack that produced four in three matches and could not respond quickly enough once they went behind here.

The tie is also a useful marker for how the expanded knockout bracket played out. Norway, a second-placed group qualifier with a negative-looking defensive record, went on to eliminate Brazil. Seeding counted for less in this tournament than in any recent edition.
