Levante UD 5-2 Real Betis Balompié: Primera Division Match Report, 29 August 2026

Levante UD 5-2 Real Betis Balompié produced seven goals, more than any La Liga fixture had managed up to that point in the season, and the oddest part of it is that Levante had not scored at all before kick-off. Their opening fortnight was two away trips: a 3-0 defeat at Espanyol and a goalless draw at Osasuna. One point, no goals, seventeenth place. On their first home afternoon of the campaign they scored five.

Betis arrived with the mirror image of that record and the same tiny sample behind it — two 1-0 wins, at home to Real Sociedad and away at Valencia, six points from six, two goals scored and none conceded. Fifth in the table, and one of only two defences in the division still unbreached, the other being Barcelona's. That record lasted 45 minutes: the half-time score was 2-2, so all four of the opening goals belonged to a genuinely even contest.

What separated the sides came after the interval, and the record is thin about it. Three more goals to Levante and none to Betis is everything the provider gives us. There is no breakdown inside the half, so nothing can be said about whether the match turned quickly or drained away.

Neither club's 2025/26 season contains an afternoon like this one. Levante finished eighteenth on 42 points having conceded 61. Betis finished fifth on 60 points with fifteen draws, more than anyone else in the division, and a +11 difference built on control rather than scoring. A 5-2 fits neither profile.

For Levante this was the whole season to date arriving at once: first goals, first win, first three points, and a goal difference moved from -3 to level. Three matches is not a sample, and a side that shipped 61 goals last season is not remade by one afternoon, but the two scoreless away trips no longer stand alone as the description of them.

For Betis the damage is mostly to a story that had been building. Two clean sheets and six points looked like a club picking up where a 60-point season left off; five conceded in the third match wipes the goal difference out and leaves it at -1. The caution runs both ways — three rounds in, last season's final table is still the better guide to what these two clubs are, and it had them eighteenth and fifth.

The case read well on paper: Betis unbeaten in both meetings last season, four points from six against this opponent, a defence yet to be beaten, and thirteen league places between the clubs in May.
