Match Summary
Goalless at half-time, decided by the only goal after it: Lille OSC 1-0 Racing Club de Lens. When in the second half that goal came is not on record; what is on record is that it was the only one, and that it was Lille's.
This was the Nord derby between last season's second and third, Lens on 70 points and Lille on 61, and eight games into the new season Lille had the better of the table. They arrived third on 15 points with a goal difference of plus five; Lens were seventh on 13, plus four.
Lille's season had been built on not conceding: six goals against in eight games, four clean sheets and a single defeat, 2-1 at Nice in September. At home they were unbeaten, with two wins and two draws, one of them a 2-2 with Paris Saint-Germain. This made five clean sheets in nine.
Lens came in the other way round. They had scored in seven of eight but had not kept a clean sheet, and they had won three in a row: 2-1 against Lyon, 3-1 at Troyes, 2-1 against Paris FC. Here they failed to score for only the second time this season; the first was a 1-0 home defeat by Lorient in September.
The fixture has a habit of shutouts. In the four previous meetings on record the side that won kept a clean sheet every time: Lille won 2-0 at Lens and 1-0 at home in 2024/25, then Lens won 3-0 at home and Lille 3-0 at home last season. Lens have now been to Lille three times in that run without scoring.
What It Settled
The derby went by without a preview from us; it was played on a weekend when nothing new went up on the site.
Lille move to 18 points from nine games and a goal difference of plus six. Lens stay on 13, now from nine, at plus three, so a two-point gap before kick-off becomes five.
Set against last season, the two clubs have swapped places in the order between them. Lens' 70 points last term came at a little over two a game; 13 from nine is under one and a half. Lille's 61 worked out at 1.79 a game, and 18 from nine is exactly two. Neither rate is a forecast after nine games, but between them they describe the swap.
For Lille the win ends a run of two draws, 1-1 at home to Brest and 1-1 at Monaco, and keeps their home record unbeaten at three wins and two draws from five. Lens' three-match winning run is over, and their away record now reads one win, one draw and three defeats, the win being that 3-1 at Troyes.
One derby in October decides nothing at the top of the table. For now, Lille hold a five-point lead over the side that finished above them last season.
