Post-Match Analysis

Match Summary

Arsenal had not beaten Liverpool in four league meetings going back to October 2024: three draws and a 1-0 defeat at Anfield in August 2025. Liverpool FC 0-1 Arsenal FC turned that Anfield result round and put Arsenal top of the table. The only goal came before half-time, and the second half produced nothing further for either side.

Liverpool started the day fifth on fifteen points from eight games, goal difference +3. Away from home they were unbeaten, three wins and a draw. At Anfield the record was thinner: one win, two draws and the 3-0 defeat by Manchester City on 11 October. They had answered that City game with wins at Brentford and at home to Brighton.

Arsenal were second on 21 points, +8, with seven wins from eight and one defeat, 3-0 at Brighton on 19 September. The three matches since had all been won, two of them, 1-0 at Nottingham Forest and 2-0 against Everton, without conceding. This made a sixth clean sheet in nine, and a third 1-0 away win of the season after Aston Villa and Forest; all four of their away wins have now come without conceding. Arsenal have scored fourteen league goals, six fewer than City, and lead the table anyway.

The site was not being updated that weekend, so we called nothing here; a top-five meeting at Anfield goes into the archive with no pick attached.

What It Settled

Manchester City had lost at home to Brighton the day before and stayed on 21 points, so the win put Arsenal top by three: 24 from nine games, goal difference +9, with the two clubs level on matches played. Liverpool stay on fifteen with a goal difference of +2, and their gap to the leaders has grown from six points to nine.

The more useful comparison nine games in is with last season, since a three-point lead in November decides nothing. Arsenal won the league with 85 points; spread over nine games that is about twenty, and they have 24, behind a defence that has conceded five goals all season. Liverpool finished fifth on 60, which would be fourteen at this stage. They have fifteen, so the result costs them ground on the leaders without dropping them behind their own pace from a year ago.

Anfield is where their season has a clear pattern. Both of their defeats have come there, against last season's top two, and they have now failed to score in three of their five home games, four goals in all. Five matches is a small sample, but nothing else in their record is as consistent.
