Both goals arrived before the interval and neither side added to them: Málaga CF 1-1 RC Deportivo La Coruña, the first meeting of two promoted clubs in this division and a match whose second half produced nothing at all.

The half-time score being identical to the full-time one is the most informative thing about the evening. Two newly promoted sides, each looking for a first point or a first win at this level, went in level and then played forty-five minutes without either finding a way through. That is the shape a fixture like this was always most likely to take, and it is the shape that suited the visitors better than the hosts.
