Five goals in a knockout match involving Mexico is a genuine surprise. They had come through the group stage without conceding a single goal and had kept a clean sheet in the Round of 32 as well — four matches, none against. They then conceded three in ninety minutes.

For England it is a second consecutive one-goal knockout win, and a second in which they had to score at least twice. Their entire knockout run followed this shape: 2-1, 3-2, 2-1 after extra time, and then a 1-2 semi-final defeat.

Mexico won Group A with the maximum nine points, beating South Africa 2-0, South Korea 1-0 and Czechia 3-0 without conceding. They then beat Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32, both goals arriving before half-time. Four matches, eight goals scored, none conceded — the best defensive record in the tournament at that point.

England topped Group L on seven points, opening with a 4-2 win over Croatia before a goalless draw with Ghana and a 2-0 win against Panama. In the Round of 32 they came from a half-time deficit to beat Congo DR 2-1.

The Croatia result is the precedent for this one. England's only six-goal match of the group stage came against a side willing to attack them, and Mexico — playing at home, unbeaten, and needing to chase once England led — became the second.

England advanced to a quarter-final against Norway, winning 2-1 after extra time, then lost 1-2 to Argentina in the semi-final. They finished third by beating France 6-4 in the play-off.

This was the match in which their knockout template became clear: concede first or concede early, score more, win by one. It worked three times and failed once, against Argentina.

For Mexico, elimination in the last sixteen ends a tournament that had been statistically the most impressive of any host in recent memory until this afternoon. Nine points, six goals, no goals conceded in the group; a clean-sheet Round of 32; and then three goals against in the one match where the opposition could genuinely hurt them.
