Netherlands 1-1 Morocco, and Morocco through 3-2 on penalties. Goalless at half-time, level at ninety, goalless again through extra time, and settled from twelve yards after two hours in which neither side could manufacture a decisive second goal.

This was the tie of the round. The Netherlands had topped Group F with ten goals; Morocco had come through Group C level on points with Brazil. Both arrived in form, and the result was 120 minutes of almost nothing — one goal each, a goalless additional period, and a shoot-out that went to the team that had spent the group stage taking points off Brazil.

For the Netherlands it is an elimination at the first knockout hurdle despite one of the strongest group campaigns in the tournament. Ten goals scored in three matches counted for nothing across a night when they managed one in 120 minutes.

The Netherlands won Group F with seven points. They drew their opener 2-2 with Japan, then beat Sweden 5-1 and Tunisia 3-1. Ten scored, four conceded — the most productive attack in the group and a defence that leaked just enough to raise questions.

Morocco finished Group C on seven points, level with Brazil and separated only by the head-to-head 1-1 draw between them. They followed that with a 1-0 win over Scotland and a 4-2 win against Haiti. Six goals scored, three conceded, and a group campaign in which their signature result was holding one of the tournament favourites.

The Brazil draw is the key to this tie. Morocco had already demonstrated they could absorb pressure from an elite attacking side for ninety minutes and come away with a result. Doing it again over 120 minutes against the Dutch was a repeat performance rather than a surprise.

Morocco went on to beat Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16 — their most emphatic performance of the tournament — before losing 2-0 to France in the quarter-final. Reaching the last eight having eliminated the Netherlands on penalties is the strongest World Cup run they have produced in a generation, and it ended without them conceding until the second half against France.

For the Netherlands the tournament ends far below what the group stage promised. Ten goals in three matches, top of a group containing Japan and Sweden, and then a first knockout tie in which the attack that had scored five against Sweden could not find a second goal in two hours.

This was the second of three penalty shoot-outs in the Round of 32, and the second to eliminate a pre-tournament favourite. Between this and Germany's exit to Paraguay, the opening knockout round removed two of the sides most people expected to reach the last four.
