OGC Nice 0-0 FC Lorient — goalless at half-time, goalless at the end, and about as faithful a reproduction of two teams' underlying numbers as an opening weekend is likely to produce.

Both sides arrived with records that pointed here. Nice finished sixteenth in 2025/26 on 32 points, and at the Allianz Riviera they were 4-8-5, scoring 19 and conceding 27 in seventeen matches. Eight home draws was the joint-highest figure in Ligue 1, and they closed the campaign with four draws in their final five. Lorient finished ninth on 45 points but split their season hard by venue: 8-6-3 at home against 3-6-8 on the road, where they managed seventeen goals in seventeen matches and failed to score in nine of them. Two splits averaging a goal a game, meeting each other, with the two joint-highest draw counts in the division between them.

The goalless first half was the tell the preview asked for. Lorient's away season was defined by containment and by not scoring, and the reading was that if they set up to repeat it the likely outcomes were 0-0 and 1-1. They did, and it was the first of the two. Nice, for their part, conceded 60 goals last season — the second-heaviest total in the division — and kept a clean sheet here, which is the less predictable half of the result.

A point apiece and nothing that a season will lean on. Nice were a relegation-quality side at home last year by win count, four in seventeen, and one goalless draw does not distinguish an improvement from a repetition. Lorient's ninth place was earned almost entirely in Brittany, and a scoreless away afternoon is precisely what their road record had been doing for a full campaign.

The wider round gives some perspective on how little separates these two from the division's floor: Marseille won 4-0, Lens 5-2, Lille and Monaco won away, and Rennes took a point from Paris Saint-Germain. Against that, a scoreless draw between the sixteenth- and ninth-placed sides of last season reads as two clubs starting where they finished. It is one match, and neither club's structure changed over a summer because of it, but nothing here suggests either has moved.

Our pre-match call was the Draw at 3.30, and it landed on the most predictable of the three scoreless routes to it.

The case was explicitly a frequency case rather than a certainty case: eight home draws in seventeen for Nice, six away draws in seventeen for Lorient, and four of nine recorded meetings level. At 3.30 the price needed the draw a little over 30 per cent of the time and both sides' records argued for more than that.
