Olympique de Marseille 4-0 RC Strasbourg Alsace: Ligue 1 Match Report

Ligue 1 opened on a Friday night at the Vélodrome and gave nothing away for forty-five minutes before producing the biggest winning margin of the round: Olympique de Marseille 4-0 RC Strasbourg Alsace, goalless at half-time and four goals inside the second period.

The two-part structure is the whole story. Marseille finished fifth last season on 59 points and were formidable at home — 11-4-2, 41 goals in seventeen matches, kept off the scoresheet once all campaign — but they were not a controlling side there. Twenty goals conceded in seventeen home matches and five home clean sheets is a middling defensive return, and twelve of those seventeen home fixtures cleared two and a half goals. What that record produced was open, productive matches rather than shutouts.

Strasbourg's away profile said much the same. Eighth on 53 points, 6-5-6 on the road with 28 scored and 28 conceded, and both teams scoring in thirteen of seventeen away trips — the highest such rate of any home or away split in the division. They were blanked three times in seventeen away matches all season.

A goalless first half therefore fitted neither side's normal shape, and what followed fitted only one of them. Four goals in a half sits comfortably with Marseille's home scoring rate; Strasbourg being shut out is the part that runs against a full season of evidence.

It is one match, played on the opening night, and neither club's league position from May has been revised by it. Marseille finished fifth on 59 points and Strasbourg eighth on 53 — six points and three places apart, which a 4-0 does not reflect and should not be read as correcting.

The narrower point is about venue rather than about either squad. Marseille took 37 of a possible 51 points at the Vélodrome last season and scored 41 goals doing it; an emphatic home win in round one extends a pattern that was already the strongest thing about them. Their away record last season, 7-1-9, is where their campaign was actually lost, and this result says nothing about it.

For Strasbourg, a heavy defeat at one of the division's better home grounds is the least informative kind of bad result. They scored 58 goals last season, fifth-highest in Ligue 1, and one away blank does not challenge that.

The inputs were about as aligned as this market gets: Strasbourg saw goals at both ends in thirteen of seventeen away matches, Marseille failed to score at home once in seventeen and conceded twenty there, and seven of ten recorded meetings between the clubs had both teams scoring, including all six draws.

What we underweighted was the scenario we listed last ourselves. Marseille kept five home clean sheets in seventeen, and we noted that opening-round caution makes a low, one-sided score more plausible than season averages suggest. That is the match that was played, with the caution in the first half and the one-sidedness in the second. A 4-0 does not require a defensive masterclass to beat this market, only an ordinary night from the visitors.
