Portugal 0-1 Spain: FIFA World Cup Round of 16 Match Report

Portugal 0-1 Spain, the Iberian tie, and another single goal from the eventual champions. Goalless at half-time, decided in the second half, and a fifth consecutive match in which Spain did not concede.

This was the tightest of Spain's knockout wins before the final, and the one that most resembled it: nothing for forty-five minutes, one goal, and a defence that gave up nothing at the other end. By this point Spain had played five matches and conceded zero.

Portugal go out having conceded two goals in five matches. It is one of the best defensive campaigns of the tournament and it produced exactly one knockout win.

Spain topped Group H with seven points and three clean sheets — a goalless draw with Cape Verde Islands, a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 win against Uruguay. They then beat Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32, their most emphatic performance of the tournament.

Portugal finished second in Group K on five points, drawing 1-1 with Congo DR, beating Uzbekistan 5-0 and drawing 0-0 with Colombia. Six goals scored, one conceded. In the Round of 32 they beat Croatia 2-1 in a match that was also goalless at half-time.

Both sides therefore arrived with defences that had barely been breached — Spain none in four matches, Portugal one in four. A goalless first half was the likeliest opening this tie could produce, and it duly arrived.

Spain advanced through Belgium in the quarter-final, France in the semi-final, and Argentina in the final, winning the World Cup with one goal conceded in seven matches before the last one. This was the fourth of those clean sheets and the second knockout tie they won 1-0.

Portugal's elimination in the last sixteen is a harsh outcome for a side that conceded twice across the whole tournament. Both of their meetings with serious opposition — the 0-0 against Colombia and this 1-0 — produced a single goal between them across 180 minutes, and only one of those matches had a knockout consequence.

The tie also removed the last of the pre-tournament European favourites outside Spain and France. Germany and the Netherlands had gone on penalties in the Round of 32; Portugal and Croatia went by a single goal each in the two rounds that followed.
