Rayo Vallecano de Madrid 1-1 Deportivo Alavés, goalless at the break and shared after it, ended two separate patterns in the same forty-five minutes: eight consecutive meetings between these clubs had produced a winner, and Alavés had not scored at Vallecas in four visits.

Neither trend was flimsy. Rayo finished 2025/26 eighth on 50 points and made that season at home, going 7-10-2 at Vallecas with fifteen goals conceded in nineteen matches — 0.79 a game, a figure only Barcelona bettered in the division. For the visitors this is a second consecutive result on the board: they opened the season by beating Getafe 3-0 at Mendizorroza and have now taken a point in Madrid. Rayo, beaten 2-1 at Sevilla on matchday one, have their first point of the campaign but not the home win their 2025/26 record at this ground would have implied.

Two matches into a season is not a sample, and calling Alavés improved on the strength of four points from six is worth resisting. They finished fourteenth with a minus-twelve goal difference and four away wins in nineteen; a good week does not overwrite that.

What can be said is that Alavés have already scored four goals in two matches, one of them against the meanest home defence outside Barcelona, having managed nineteen away goals in the whole of last season. Rayo have conceded in both opening fixtures after allowing fifteen at home all year.

Neither observation is a trend yet. The useful frame remains the 2025/26 table: eighth and fourteenth, seven points apart, with Rayo's advantage concentrated almost entirely in what they do at Vallecas. That advantage produced a draw here, which is what it produced in ten of nineteen home matches last season.

Backing a four-match scoring drought to extend is a thinner edge than the run makes it look.
