Ahead at the interval, beaten by full time. RC Celta de Vigo 1-2 CA Osasuna in the rescheduled opening-round fixture at Balaídos, with the home side leading 1-0 at half-time and conceding twice after it.

The half-time score is what makes the result stand out, and it also removes the easiest explanation for it. Celta were not overrun; they were in front, in a match both clubs came into on one point apiece after goalless draws — Celta at Valencia on 22 August, Osasuna at home to Levante on 24 August. The first goals of either club's season arrived here, and Osasuna scored two of the three.

For the fixture itself the pattern is now emphatic. Celta won 3-2 in Pamplona in October 2025, Osasuna won 2-1 in Vigo in February 2026, and Osasuna have now won 2-1 in Vigo again. Three consecutive meetings, three away wins, and back-to-back visiting victories at this ground by the same scoreline. We flagged the February result before kick-off as the awkward fact in an otherwise straightforward case; it turns out to have been the pattern rather than the exception.

The league positions behind it have not changed. Celta finished sixth on 54 points last season with 53 scored and 48 conceded; Osasuna finished sixteenth on 42 with eighteen defeats and a negative goal difference. Two matches into the new campaign, that twelve-point gap is still the best description of these two squads — and it has now twice failed to describe what happens when they meet in Vigo.

Osasuna's first three points of the season, and they came in the category their 2025/26 record says they manage least often: an away win against a top-six side. Eighteen defeats in a 38-match season is the profile of a team that loses in a wide range of circumstances, and most of their 42 points had to come at El Sadar. Taking three in Vigo is worth more to them than the raw arithmetic.

Celta's position is the mirror image and not yet a problem. One point from two matches, one goal scored, and a home defeat in a fixture their table position said they should not lose. A sixth-placed side does not become a bad one across two August fixtures, and nothing about this result revises last season's 54 points.

What it does settle is a smaller and more specific thing: this ground has now surrendered a Celta lead to this opponent, and the away side has won the last three meetings outright.

The case was the twelve-point gap and a market that needed only the better team to avoid defeat at home. Against that we wrote that the one thing capable of beating it was a repeat of February, when Osasuna came to Vigo and won 2-1. That is the exact scoreline, at the exact ground, against the exact opponent.

At 1.30 a selection has to land close to four times in five, and losing one costs three winners. We downweighted the head-to-head in favour of the season-long table, and in this fixture the head-to-head has now been right three times running.
