Valencia scored their first goal of the season here and still lost by two. RC Deportivo La Coruña 3-1 Valencia CF, 2-1 at the interval, which makes this the rare early-season fixture where the half-time and full-time splits agree on who was better.

Deportivo came up into this division and had spent their first fortnight drawing: 1-1 at home with Elche, 1-1 away at Málaga, two points, a level goal difference and twelfth place. Valencia had spent theirs failing to score — a goalless draw with Celta and a 1-0 home defeat by Betis, both at their own ground, one point and no goals in 180 minutes. What it does establish is that they are not being overrun, which was the open question about a promoted team.

The concern is narrower than the table: they have now scored one goal in three matches, and last season's 46 was already the sort of total that left them with a negative difference.
