Real Oviedo 1-1 Villarreal: Primera Division Match Report

Real Oviedo 1-1 Villarreal was a visiting lead at half-time and a home equaliser after it. The interval read 0-1 and the second period 1-0, so the bottom club recovered a deficit against the side in third and took a point that nothing about the table entitled them to.

Except that the table was misleading here. Oviedo were last on 27 points from 31 matches with a goal difference of -24, but they had won three of five going into this: 1-0 over Valencia, 1-0 against Sevilla, 3-0 at Celta. That last result — a three-goal away win at a side chasing Europe — was the loudest signal available and the one most likely to be ignored by anybody reading only the standings.

Villarreal were third on 61 with +20, twelve behind Real Madrid and four ahead of Atleti, in a position they had held for most of the spring. Their five preceding matches were three wins, a draw at Alavés and a 0-1 at Girona. They had won the reverse fixture 2-0 on the opening weekend of the season, which by April was the least relevant thing on the record.

Villarreal moved to 62 points and kept the difference at +20, holding third by five from Atleti but dropping two points at a ground where their rivals would expect three. With six rounds to go and a five-point cushion, that is affordable rather than costly — but the direction of travel matters, and Villarreal had now taken ten points from their previous five.

Oviedo reached 28 with -24, still bottom and still six points from 17th, having taken the same ten points from their own previous five. The gap to safety did not close, because the clubs above them were also winning, but for the first time in months their form line was not the worst in the division. What the point could not do is change the arithmetic: six matches, eighteen points, six to make up, and the worst goal difference in the bottom four.

Our pre-match call was Villarreal Win at 1.80. It failed, and the case against it was sitting in the form guide. Oviedo had won three of their previous five, including 3-0 away at Celta, which is not the profile of a side simply waiting to go down. We read the 34-point gap and the 2-0 from August and priced accordingly. In April, a bottom club playing for its life is a different opponent from the one that lost on the opening weekend, and 1.80 offered no compensation for that. Verdict: lost
