Three goals in the first half, two in the second, and the winning margin never actually threatened: Real Racing Club de Santander 3-2 Elche CF at El Sardinero, 3-0 at the interval.

The half-time score is the striking half of it. Elche took eight points from nineteen away matches last season, winning one and losing thirteen, with nineteen scored and thirty-eight conceded — the worst road record in the division by a distance. Conceding three before the break to a promoted side is consistent with that ledger rather than a departure from it, and it is the passage of play the pick was built on.

The second half complicates the picture without changing the result. Elche scored twice, which is worth noting precisely because they so rarely did it away from home: nineteen goals in nineteen away fixtures last season is one a game, and they managed two here after falling three behind. Whether that reflects a different Elche or a promoted side easing off a three-goal lead is not something the scoreline can tell us, and we are not going to guess.

For Racing this is a third fixture and a first win. They opened with a 2-2 at home against Villarreal on 16 August, having been level 2-2 at half-time there too, then lost 1-0 at Getafe on 23 August. Three matches, four points, five goals scored — but there is no top-flight season behind them for us to measure any of it against, and three fixtures is not a form line for a club playing at this level for the first time in this cycle.

Four points from three for Racing, and the more useful detail is which three. Villarreal at home, Getafe away and Elche at home is a harder opening than the fixture list gives most promoted clubs, and they have come through it having lost once.

For Elche it is one point from three, three goals scored and nine conceded, and a second away fixture that ended the way most of last season's did. Thirteen away defeats in 2025/26 was not a run inside a good season — it was the whole season, and the first month of this one has not yet produced any evidence against it. Their home record is the other half of that split: thirty-five points and only two defeats at the Martínez Valero. Nothing here speaks to that.

Three rounds settle very little either way, and one of the two clubs involved has no top-flight baseline at all.

The reasoning had one spine: Elche's eight points from nineteen away matches, one win in a full season on the road, and thirty-eight goals conceded travelling. We were explicit that we were not backing Racing to be good — only backing a side that won once away all year not to win here. At 3-0 by the interval that proposition was effectively settled.

The caveat we raised was that half the fixture was invisible to us, and that remains true. Two Elche goals after the break is the reminder that the margin looked safer at half-time than the final score suggests.
